Communication has increased gradually over the years. With the help of continuous technological advancement, people switched from instant messaging to video calls for connecting.

By streamlining free communication features, Microsoft aims to respond better to customer requirements. As a result, they will be discontinuing Skype on 5th May 2025 to concentrate on Microsoft Teams (free), a next-generation communication and collaboration tool.

Microsoft Teams offers all key Skype features, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, Teams include advanced features like meeting hosting, calendar management, and free community creation.

Hundreds of millions of individuals already have Teams as their central location for collaboration, enabling them to remain connected and productive at work, in school, and at home. ‘Teams’ users spent 4X more minutes in meetings over the last two years, which shows the importance it plays in day-to-day communication and collaboration.

As you make this next step with Teams, you can look forward to numerous possibilities. They feel excited to continue empowering people’s day-to-day connections, beginning by making it simple to sign in to Teams with their Skype account.

    What’s next for Skype users

Throughout this transition phase, the users have an option:

    • Switch to Microsoft Teams for free
Within the next few days, they are going to deploy the option for Skype users to log into Teams (free) on any supported platform with their Skype account—beginning today with members of both the Teams and Skype Insider programs.

During the transition phase, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users, and Skype users can call and chat with Teams users. This ensures you will be able to stay in touch with everyone regardless of the platform you’re currently using during the transition.
    • Export your Skype data
If you do not want to transition to Teams, you have the option of exporting your data such as chats, contacts, and call history.

Begin with ‘Microsoft Teams’ for free

Start with an easy process for switching everything to Teams. It won’t stop you from using Skype while you make the change.

    Here’s how to begin:

    • Download and install ‘Teams’ on your device from the Microsoft Teams official website.
    • Sign in with your Skype login.
    • Begin using Teams with all your Skype conversations and contacts available to use.

To help with this, they have created a step-by-step guide to guide you into using Teams and taking advantage of its capabilities.

    Skype: Changes to Paid Services

Skype will no longer offer paid features like Skype Credit and subscriptions for new customers. Existing subscribers can use their existing Skype Credit and subscriptions until the next renewal date. After May 5, 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will still be available for remaining paid users via the Skype web portal and Microsoft Teams.

    Wrap Up

Skype will shut down in May 2025, but you can instead use Microsoft Teams (Free) for more productive communication and collaboration. Your conversations and contacts come with you to make the process smooth. Or, if you prefer not to make the transition, you can export your content. Connect without hassle—move to Teams now!
